Officer-Involved Shooting Suspect Identified

MIDDLEFIELD, Ohio– Police have identified the suspect that was killed in an officer-involved shooting.

It happened during a routine traffic stop on North State Avenue near Tare Creek in Middlefield around 6 p.m. on Sunday.

According to the Geauga County Sheriff’s Office, 42-year-old James L. Gilkerson got out of the car and began to shoot at the officers with an AK-47.

A female officer was shot in the hand and lifeflighted to MetroHealth Medical Center. She suffered serious injuries to her left hand and fingers, as well as a gun shot wound to her left thigh.

A male officer suffered injuries in the leg due to flying debris. He’s been treated and released.
