Officer Shot, Another Hurt During Traffic Stop

MIDDLEFIELD, Ohio -- One police officer was shot and another was hurt on Sunday as they attempted to make a traffic stop.

It happened on North State Avenue near Tare Creek in Middlefield around 6 p.m.

The suspect got out of the car and began to shoot at the officers, at which time both officers returned fire, killing the suspect, Lt. John Hiscox with the Geauga County Sheriff's Office said.

A female officer was shot in the hand and lifeflighted to MetroHealth Medical Center because of the extent of the damage.

A male officer was injured in the leg and taken to University Hospitals.  It was not clear if he was shot or injured by glass or other debris.

Other details on their conditions were not known.

People who witnessed the shootout were not hurt.

"I heard a gunshot, then heard probably at least fifteen gunshots after that, then a bunch of sirens," a man nearby said.

It was not immediately known why the officers made the traffic stop.

At the time of this report, the names of the people involved were not released.
