MENTOR, Ohio — Police in Mentor were able to track down a suspected drunken driver last week with the help of a safety and navigation system installed in his vehicle.

It started when OnStar reported a crash in front of the Smokey Bones Restaurant on State Route 306, at around 7:20 p.m. on Friday, February 22.

Mentor police say witnesses saw a black Cadillac Escalade flee the scene after the accident. A Honda Element was left heavily damaged in the roadway.

Thankfully, no one was hurt.

As the suspect drove toward Willowick, OnStar told police of the car’s location. That’s when Willowick and Mentor police tracked down the driver and arrested him.

Police say 56-year-old Richard Marucci, of Willowick, was “obviously intoxicated” at the scene.

He was charged with OVI and hit-skip, and pleaded not guilty in court earlier this week.

Marcucci is expected in court again at the end of March.
