(CNN) — A lot of fashion fans were expecting to see Anne Hathaway in Valentino at the Oscars and were caught off guard when she arrived wearing pale pink Prada instead.

It was a noticeable switch, given Hathaway’s frequent reliance on Valentino – her wedding gown was custom-made by the fashion house – as well as the fact that the label reportedly sent out a press release about her dress pre-Oscars.

Hathaway, 30, told E!’s Ryan Seacrest on the red carpet that it had been a last-minute decision. The Prada gown, which some found highlighted a certain part of her anatomy, was “the one that spoke to me in the end,” Hathaway said.

What she didn’t say at the time was that her switcheroo was brought on by the possibility of another actress wearing a dress similar to her original Valentino number.

“It came to my attention late Saturday night that there would be a dress worn to the Oscars that is remarkably similar to the Valentino I had intended to wear, and so I decided it was best for all involved to change my plans,” the best supporting actress Oscar winner told Women’s Wear Daily in a statement.

“Though I love the dress I did wear, it was a difficult last-minute decision as I had so looked forward to wearing Valentino in honor of the deep and meaningful relationship I have enjoyed with the house and with Valentino himself. I deeply regret any disappointment caused.”
