WOOSTER, Ohio -- Robert Ress of Wooster was at home sleeping early Sunday morning when he was awoken by loud noises.

“I was sleeping and I heard three shots, and I thought it was poachers probably going after deer,” said Ress.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol said just after 2 a.m. an SUV driven by Stephen Thompson, 26, of Ashland, along with his passenger, Ryan Porter, 24, of West Salem, attempted to elude police as well as the Highway Patrol on Smithville-Western Road in Wooster.

“Something was going on up in town, they couldn't give us any details on that, but then they followed him up here, and for some reason he thought he could cut out through fields or something after coming up this driveway," Ress said.  "Judging from the tracks, they must of come up the drive, tried to get out back that way, saw there was nowhere to go, looped around the tree, hugged the side of the yard here, cause the cops were blocking the end of the driveway by then.  He tried to get out.  As you can see he came down the side of the yard, tried to get around the cops.  At that time somebody was shot and he ended up in the bank over there."

According to the Highway Patrol, the vehicle was accelerating toward the officers and that’s when shots were fired into the vehicle, striking Porter.

“They took the one guy out, he was hollering about his leg, he was hollering pretty much the whole time, 'Get me out of here.'  When they put him on the stretcher and took him by ambulance he was hollering about his legs,” added Ress.

Porter was transported to Wooster Memorial Hospital and later to Akron General Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

The driver, Thompson, was taken to the Wayne County Justice Center Jail.
