MT. GILEAD, Ohio — Officials told Fox 8 News they believe a series of crashes along an Ohio freeway was caused by poor road conditions due to weather.

According to the Mt. Gilead Fire Department, a whiteout impacted drivers on I-71, south of Mansfield, around 2:30 p.m. on Saturday.

The Knox Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol said two of the northbound lanes were closed north of I-95 to the Richland County line.

They were later reopened.

Minor injuries were reported, but other details were not immediately available.

The incident was one of the first signs of weather on Saturday, and as evening fell, other areas got their coating of snow.

Drivers are advised to allow extra time for their travels and exercise caution.
