CLEVELAND– The Better Business Bureau is warning local businesses to hang up on callers who claim to be from a utility company.

The BBB says the fake company is demanding an immediate payment to avoid having electricity shut off.

The BBB says someone at the #1 Express Carwash & Detail Center in Westlake received a call from someone claiming to be with the “shut down department” of the Illuminating Company.

The caller stated that power would be shut off unless a payment was immediately made. The caller claimed a recent check didn’t cover the amount.

It was later confirmed with the Illuminating Company that the call did not come from them.

The scam is being reported not only in the Cleveland area, but other states, as well.

The callers are described as having heavy accents and using phone numbers with local area codes.

FirstEnergy says this is a scam. Hang up on the caller and call FirstEnergy customer service if you have any questions.
