CLEVELAND — Homicide detectives are investigating after an infant died at a Cleveland hospital Monday morning. The baby’s father was originally taken into police custody, then later released.

According to Cleveland police, officers were called to a home in the 500 block of East 103rd Street sometime after 9 a.m. Sunday.

There, they found a 4-month-old girl unresponsive in an upstairs bedroom. Her father was sitting in a chair, crying, police said.

Cleveland EMS took the baby to University Hospitals, where she died early Monday morning.

The father told officers that he fell asleep after feeding his daughter earlier that morning, a police report stated. The man said when he woke up about 45 minutes later, he found a pillow on top of her, and she appeared not to be breathing.

Police later arrested the father for felonious assault and child endangering. He has not been charged.

Monday night, Cleveland police said the father was released pending further investigation.
