ALLIANCE, Ohio — Nearly 325 Columbia Gas customers on the north side of Alliance were without service Friday night.

Columbia Gas spokesman Ken Stammen said the outage occurred Friday morning in the Gaskill Street area.

Stammen said it was not the result of a leak, but instead, that the city’s water department was completing work near one of the gas lines and shut off a valve it thought was a water line.

Stammen said when gas is shut off, the company must complete a complex process to turn it back on. That includes re-energizing the line.

Local Columbia workers and crews from other parts of northeast Ohio were called to help restore service, and planned to begin at about midnight.

Columbia asked that anyone affected by the outage turn on their porch light.

As they restore service, Columbia workers need someone to be in the home so they can enter, complete a safety check and relight pilot lights.
