HOLMES COUNTY, Ohio — A 12-year-old middle school student was killed in a crash in Holmes County early Thursday.

It happened just after 7 a.m. on State Route 60 in Monroe Township.

The Holmes County Sheriff’s Office said Lane Clabough, 12, of Millersburg, was killed in the crash. Clabough’s brother, Donald E. Dowling III, 18, was driving them to school at the time, when the car left the winding road, hit an embankment and then a tree.

The vehicle flipped over upon impact before coming to a rest on its wheels.

Both were wearing their seat belts, and alcohol is not suspected as a factor in the crash, officials said.

Clabough’s classmates remembered him Friday by wearing his favorite color, pink, in his memory.

“He was always happy and smiling,” said classmate Kaitlin Bretz. “Never in a bad mood or mad about anything.”

“He had a lot of friends,” said classmate Sarah Petersheim. “They are very upset, too. He played basketball, and we cheered for him.”

“The Holmes County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the cause of the crash.
