WINDSOR, Ashtabula Co. — Firefighters in Windsor battled a giant mulch fire early Sunday.

It happened around 4 a.m. at JD Hardwoods on state Route 534.

The Ashtabula County Sheriff’s Office said it appears as though the mulch may have caught fire on its own. The flames were fanned by up to 50 mile per hour winds that blew through the area overnight, according to the sheriff’s office.

Fire crews from more than a dozen communities managed to save the company’s main building. The flames spread to a storage shed, but there was no major damage.

One firefighter was hurt when he slipped on the ice.
