HIGHLAND HILLS, Ohio -- Students from all over northeast Ohio competed in the first ever robotics competition hosted by Tri-C Eastern Campus on Saturday.

A total of 24 teams of high school students took part in the FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) Robotics Tournament, which is co-sponsored by Rockwell International.

The teams began designing, building and programming their own machines in September 2012. Awards were given for using sound engineering principles, overall design, community outreach, and how the machines compete against one another in challenges.

The winner of the FTC tournament will move on to represent northeast Ohio at the state-level competition in Cincinnati, Ohio in February.

The FTC organization was founded in 1989 to promote interest in the engineering, science and technology fields.
