LOS ANGELES, Calif. — A day of holiday fun turned into a nightmare when a group of sled riders found themselves fighting for their lives.

It happened in the mountains above Los Angeles, where residents were taking in a rare sight: fresh snow and ice covering a lake.

But despite a few warning signs, several adventure seekers grabbed their sleds and slid across the frozen water.

That’s when the trouble began.

One man fell through the ice while horrified onlookers shouted, “He can’t swim!”

Another man ran to his rescue; he, too, ended up in the icy water.

Soon, six would-be rescuers found themselves struggling in the freezing water.

After 10 agonizing minutes, the first man was pulled to safety. Thankfully, the others made it out safely, as well.
