Winter Safety Checklist: Are You Ready?

CLEVELAND — A massive snowstorm is hitting northeast Ohio, and the American Red Cross wants residents to be safe.

The National Weather Service has issued winter storm and blizzard warnings for the entire FOX 8 viewing area, with accumulations expected between 8-12 inches.

Many winter storms are accompanied by dangerously low temperatures, strong winds, ice, sleet and freezing rain.

That’s why the Red Cross encourages those affected by the weather to check the following lists to ensure their safety.

What should residents do?

  • Dress in several layers of lightweight clothing, wear mittens and a hat (preferably one that covers your ears).
  • Wear waterproof boots
  • Minimize travel
  • Listen to weather updates on radio or news
  • Winterize your vehicle
  • Insulate your home
  • Maintain heating equipment
  • Bring pets/companions inside during winter weather
  • Running water, even at a trickle, helps prevent pipes from freezing
  • All fuel-burning equipment should be vented to the outside and kept clear.

What supplies do I need?

  • Water (at least 3-day supply; one gallon per person per day)
  • Food (at least 3-day supply of non-perishable, easy-to-prepare food)
  • Flashlight
  • Battery-powered or hand-crank radio
  • Extra batteries
  • First Aid Kit
  • Medications (7-Day supply) and medical items
  • Multi-purpose tool
  • Sanitation and hygiene items
  • Cell phones with chargers
  • Baby supplies
  • Warm coats, mittens, hats, boots, etc.
  • Extra cash
  • Family and emergency contact information
