Woman Dies After Spending 4 Decades in Coma

MIAMI GARDENS, Florida — A 59-year-old woman who spent 42 years in a diabetic coma died Wednesday, according to the Examiner.

Edwarda O’Bara slipped into the coma at age 16 in 1970 after becoming ill from her medication. Reports say shortly before slipping into the coma, O’Bara asked her mother to never leave her side. Her mother, Kaye O’Bara, died in 2008 after caring for her daughter full-time. After her death, O’Bara’s sister Colleen took over.

A book was written about the family in 2001 titled, “A Promise is a Promise: An Almost Unbelievable Story of a Mother’s Unconditional Love and What It Can Teach Us.”
