ALLIANCE, Ohio — One man was found dead and his girlfriend was hurt in an Alliance house fire early Monday.

The Stark County Coroner’s Office has identified the victim as Willie Hicks, 56.

According to the Alliance Fire Department, a neighbor called 911 around 3:30 a.m. to report the fire at 736 Wade Ave.

Fire Chief Jason Hunt said when firefighters arrived, there were flames showing in all windows of the home, and Hicks’ girlfriend was lying in the middle of the street.

Witnesses said she’d leapt from a second floor window. She was taken to Akron Children’s Hospital for treatment of burn injuries.

Hunt said one firefighter was injured when he fell off a staircase. He was treated and released from a local hospital.

The cause and origin of the fire have not yet been released, but firefighters say the home is a complete loss.

Neighbors said Hicks was a long-time resident, and many of them were his friends.

“He was a very nice guy,” said neighbor Jeff Stargen. “He was always working on cars…he was a pretty good guy.”
