Gary Fury, 54, of Berea.

CLEVELAND– The driver who struck and severely injured an off-duty police officer with his car was sentenced Tuesday.

54-year-old Gary Fury will spend two and a half years behind bars. That was the maximum sentence he could have received.

The September hit-and-run crash left Officer Robert Bielak fighting for his life.

The 46-year-old officer, from Pinckney, Michigan, was on his way to Vermont for an annual trip when he pulled over his motorcycle on I-71 to check his map. That’s when he was hit.

Fury was arrested at his Berea home, days after the hit-and-run and charged with vehicular assault and leaving the scene of an accident.

Officer Bielak lost his leg in the crash and then suffered complications from surgery. He is out of the hospital.
