(CNN) — Spanish police arrested a man who allegedly planned a bombing massacre at a university on Spain’s Balearic Islands and seized 140 kilograms of explosive materials, authorities said Thursday.

The 21-year-old suspect was arrested in Palma de Mallorca on Wednesday as he received the explosive materials that he had acquired through the Internet, a police statement said.

Police allege he planned to carry out a slaughter at the University of the Balearic Islands in an attempt to imitate the 1999 U.S. massacre that left 15 dead at a high school in Columbine, Colorado.

“In his personal diary he showed a hatred for society with expressions of great violence and his decision to strategically place pipe bombs filled with shrapnel on the university campus,” the police statement said.
