AVON LAKE, Ohio — A middle school student in Avon Lake has been diagnosed as having a MRSA infection, according to school officials Monday.

Avon Lake City School officials sent a notice to parents stating a student at Learwood Middle School has the infection known as Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus, or MRSA.

The district says it has taken all necessary precautions to prevent the spread of the bacteria. Schools are not required to conduct special cleansing measures when a case of MRSA is confirmed, but say custodians cleaned with a disinfectant.

MRSA is a staph infection and commonly causes skin infections. For more information on the infection, how to prevent it and how to treat it, visit the Ohio Department of Health website by clicking here.
