Store Clerk Shot, Killed on East Side Identified

CLEVELAND — A store clerk killed as a shootout unfolded during an attempted robbery has been identified.

According to the Cuyahoga County medical examiner’s office, the victim’s name is Duane C. Jacobs.

Jacobs, 57, was working at Ya Ya Mart on Union Avenue near East 99th Street in Cleveland when two men attempted to rob the store around 9 p.m. Tuesday.

The Cleveland Division of Police said the suspects first asked the store owner for change then showed a gun and attempted to rob the place.

The store owner responded by pulling out a handgun of his own and there was an exchange of gunfire.

Jacobs was hit multiple times and taken to MetroHealth Medical Center, where he later died.

The suspects left in a silver minivan and headed northbound on E. 99th Street.

It was not known if either was shot.  The store owner did not report any injuries.
