PAINESVILLE TOWNSHIP, Ohio -- Riverside High School in Painesville Township professes having the greatest students in the nation. Now, it has the distinction of being this week's Fox 8 Cool School.
"Well, we have the best students, of course, and we have a great environment for learning," teacher Chris Basich said.
Senior Chandler Smith agrees. "Riverside, I think is a Cool School because we have the best teachers around, we have the best students and we have the best band in the land," he added.
The mission at Riverside is to provide a challenging learning environment so that each student reaches the maximum intellectual, physical and emotional growth. Principal Peter Hliatzos said that comes with educating the whole student.
"We give them an experience in everything not just the academics, but the fine arts . And, we have a great band program. We have a great art department, to go along with the academics that we offer."
Principal Hliatzos said Riverside students have shown improved state assessment scores in recent years, particularly in the 8th and 10th grade class. He credits this to new teaching techniques and technology. The is a smart board in every classroom and the use of computers takes textbook learning to the next level.
From the academics to the arts, there is a visual expression just walking through the hallways. Riverside students have painted ceiling tiles and created one of a kind murals above classroom doorways. Senior Art Student Jamie Kuta said is starts with a teacher coming up with a design.
"We do our best to put it on the wall. It's not graded or anything. It's just something fun to do. Let's me do something different," she added.
Doing something different is what you'll find at Riverside High. This week they crowned a teacher Homecoming King and Queen. "I think we have great school spirit here," Senior Student Vince Tromba said.
School spirit, academics and the arts are just some of the reasons that makes Riverside High such a Cool School.
