Gilbert, AZ (KPHO) — Medical rescue teams in Gilbert treated six people who were overcome by the heat at a grassroots political event Monday attended by former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin.

Only one person was taken to the hospital, according to Gilbert Fire Department spokesman Mike Conner. The others, ranging in age from 36 to 91, were treated on the scene.

The former Alaskan governor spoke at a rally for Congressional candidate Kirk Adams at Joe’s Farm Grill at 3000 E. Ray Rd.

Palin made mention of the heat during her opening comments.

“So many Alaskans come to Arizona to thaw out,” she said. “I saw it was about 106. That’s about 65 degrees warmer than in Alaska. I know many of you standing here are about as warm as I am.”

The grassroots event included live music and a family BBQ.
