Akron School Employee Charged With Rape of Child

AKRON, Ohio — An Akron Public School employee was arrested and charged on Tuesday with allegedly raping and sexually molesting a victim under the age of 13.

According to the Akron Municipal Court website, D’Juan Shields, 40, of Akron, was charged with two counts of rape and three counts of gross sexual imposition related to a December 1, 2011 incident on Niagara Avenue.

Officials with the Akron Public Schools tell Fox 8 News that Shields employment with the district was immediately suspended upon learning of his arrest today.

Shields has been employed by the Akron Public Schools since 2006, according to Communications Manager Leah Nemeth.

Shields most recently served as an educational assistant at Hyre Community Learning Center on Wedgewood Drive.

An arraignment on the charges is scheduled for Wednesday morning in Akron Municipal Court.
