Possible Playoff Preview: St. Edward vs Glenville
ST. EDWARD vs GLENVILLE
2010 Division I State Champion St. Edward opened its 2012 season against perennial power Cleveland Glenville at Lakewood Stadium.
The Eagles, coming off an 8-4 campaign in 2011, which included two losses to eventual State Champion St. Ignatius, took advantage of five Glenville turnovers and some hard running by senior tailback Dwayne Aaron to win easily, 42-14.
St. Edward had no trouble moving the ball early behind Aaron and senior quarterback Ryan Fallon. But neither did Glenville, which missed the playoffs in 2011, for the first time in nine years. The Tarblooders opened the scoring with a nice pass play from QB Quan Robinson Jr. to speedy wideout Marshawn Lattimore. They would add a two-point conversion for an 8-0 lead.
But Glenville wasn’t on top for long. Fallon and Aaron led the Eagle offense on a long drive, capped by Aaron’s short touchdown run to cut the deficit to 8-7.
The Tarblooders would strike back on a 9 yard TD run by Herb Walker, Jr., but that would be Glenville’s final score of the night, after they missed the extra point attempt.
Fallon came right back with a 62 yard touchdown pass to D.J. Thomas and the PAT tied the game at 14. Then, after the first of five Glenville turnovers, Aaron would add his second score of the night, and after another Tarblooder fumble, Ralph Nichols would punch it in to give the Eagles a 28-14 lead at the half.
Fallon opened the third with his second touchdown pass of the night, extending St. Eds’ lead to 35-14. Then, after the fifth and final Glenville turnover, the senior QB called his own number, finding the end zone on a 6 yard run to close out the scoring.
St. Edward (1-0) stays home next Saturday, Sept. 1 to host Akron Buchtel (0-1) at 7:00 pm at the ‘Madhouse on Madison’.
The schedule doesn’t get any easier for Glenville (0-1) which plays its second straight road game, Friday, Aug. 31, at Solon (1-0) which will be determined to prove that Friday’s nail biter against Shaker Heights was just a case of early season jitters.
