NORTH ROYALTON vs BRECKSVILLE-BROADVIEW HEIGHTS

Longtime rivals, Royalton and Brecksville played a game for the ages, lighting up the scoreboard at Browns Stadium, with a combined 96 points, as the Bears won a shootout in the annual battle for the Golden Shoe, 54 to 42.

Coach Nick Ciulli’s Bears came out determined to erase the bad memories from a 5-5 season in 2011. Royalton’s senior Quarterback, Travis Tarnowki led the Bears’ efficient spread offense up and down the field all afternoon, with plenty of help from speedy Carl Lint.  Lint, an all-purpose threat out of the backfield, carried the load, with 328 total yards from scrimmage, 160 yards rushing to go with his 168 receiving yards.

But while Lint did most of his damage between the twenties, Tarnowski was the go to guy in the red zone.  The three-year starter accounted for seven total touchdowns, three on the ground and four through the air. Tarnowski finished 15-20 for 295 yards passing, and ran 12 times for 72 yards.

Senior WR Nick Krempasky also gave the Bears a lift with 3 catches for 99 yards and a pair of scores.

Not to be outdone, Brecksville QB Tom Tupa, Jr. was outstanding in his own right.  The senior signal caller completed 35 of 45 passes for a career high 501 yards and five touchdowns.  He also added a sixth score on the ground, but his two interceptions hurt the Bees comeback attempt.

Travis Tarnowski’s cousin, Tyler Tarnowksi was on the receiving end of nine Tupa passes, finishing with 160 yards receiving and two touchdowns.

Royalton led most of the afternoon, before Brecksville scored twice in the first six minutes of the fourth quarter to tie the game at 42, but Royalton took over down the stretch, scoring the final 12 points to secure the victory.

North Royalton (1-0) travels to Revere (0-1) next Friday, August 31 at 7:00 pm, while Brecksville-Broadview Heights (0-1) hosts Fremont Ross (1-0) at 7:00 pm.
