SANDY TOWNSHIP, Ohio -- A 71-year-old Stark County woman was killed by a hit-and-run driver early Tuesday morning.

Friends and neighbors of Mary Russell of Waynesburg are devastated knowing the person who is responsible never stopped to help. Investigators have not made any arrests.

Russell was walking down State Route 43 near Priscilla Street Northeast when the crash took place. According to the Canton Post of the Ohio Highway Patrol, around 1:10 a.m., Richard Lisko, 44, of Lowellville, said he accidentally ran over the woman's body while she was lying in the middle of the roadway. Troopers believe another vehicle struck Russell just a few minutes before and then fled the scene.

"It was bad. It was really bad," said Paul Williams.

Neighbors say Russell had home health aides during the day but she has been known to wander off in the past.

One neighbor told Fox 8, "She lived across the hall from me, she was real quiet. Only time I seen her is when she come out and have a caretaker with her."

Williams worked at the building where Russell lived.

"Last night about 8 o'clock, I got a garden out back, she sat down, we talked for a while. I gave her a couple vegetables out of the garden," said Williams.  "I mean I'm going to miss Mary. If I had a down day, I knew I could track Mary down and she would make me smile one way or another," said Williams.

The Stark County Coroner’s office said an autopsy is underway.
