John Lanigan’s Son Arrests Theater Shooting Suspect
CLEVELAND — WMJI’s John Lanigan announced on the air on Friday morning that it was his son, Aurora Police Lt. Jad Lanigan, that was the arresting officer of the accused theater gunman who shot 71 people, killing 12.
“But my wife had heard on a radio, police radio out of Denver, the capture of it all. And she said it sounds exactly like Jad,” said Lanigan.
He later added, “I texted him and said ‘Can you talk’. And he went, ‘No, it’s too bad. I can’t do it now’.”
Lanigan later told his audience that Jad texted, “No, I’m too busy and it’s a nightmare. Thank you and I’m sorry.”
Lanigan said a short time passed and he then texted his son on whether or not he arrested the suspect, 24-year-old James Holmes.
“And then I asked him later, did you arrest the suspect. And he texted back, and he said ‘Yes’. That would mean that he was right there in the middle of it.”
Lt. Lanigan was the officer providing updates to the media as the situation unfolded in the overnight hours.
