INDEPENDENCE, Ohio — Two teens led Independence police on an early morning high speed chase in a stolen SUV Monday.

Officers say the teens, ages 15 and 13, were spotted driving the SUV on Selig Boulevard at approximately 4:10 a.m. Police say the vehicle was passing their cruiser in the opposite direction with their headlights off when they began pursuing the vehicle. The SUV initially slowed down, but then accelerated and attempted to turn left into Elmwood Park.

Police say the SUV struck the curb and traffic islands several times before driving off the roadway, causing the 15-year-old driver to lose control of the vehicle. The SUV rolled several times in a municipal pool parking lot before coming to a halt. Police say the driver tried to flee from the scene on foot but was caught by police. The 13-year-old passenger was ejected from the SUV, suffering serious injuries in the crash.

Both teens were taken to MetroHealth Medical Center for treatment.

Independence police are currently investigating the case.
