PITTSBURGH — Today might be a good day for a banana split, or a number of other simple pleasures too often taken for granted.

Enjoying the ice cream treat would be a fitting way to honor a baby who passed away after his fight for life touched hearts all over the world.

Ryan Roberts died on Sunday.

In his final weeks, a Facebook page called “Ryan’s Banana Split Party” was created to inspire people to get the most out of life.

People from all over the world offered virtual support to Ryan and his family while posting pictures of themselves eating banana splits.

Ryan’s mother, Diane Roberts, posted the following message on Facebook on Sunday:

“At approximately 12:10 while I held Ryan in my arms and daddy held him as well – surrounded by so many who loved him Ryan drew his last breath. He is without oxygen, medicine, tubes, wires, and HURT – he is at peace.”

Ryan came into the world with Down Syndrome and a congenital heart defect even though he was only given a 10 percent chance of being born alive.

He was just months shy of two years old when he died.
