In a moment that national media outlets are calling one of the biggest TV gaffes of all time, Kathie Lee Gifford asked actor Martin Short about his happy marriage to his wife, Nancy … only this: she died two years ago from ovarian cancer.

The cringe-worthy mistake happened on the Today show Wednesday morning when Short was there to promote his new film, Madagascar 3.

“And you and Nancy have one of the greatest marriages of anybody in show business. How many years now for you guys?” Gifford asked.

Looking somewhat confused, Short graciously answers, “36 years.”

Gifford then asked, “You’re still in love?”

“Madly in love,” Short answered.

Someone finally clued Kathie Lee in at the next commercial break. She apologized on-air, saying she felt “badly” for the error.

Later, the still-remorseful Gifford tweeted the following:

“I send my sincerest apologies to @MartinShort and his family. He handled situation w/enormous grace and kindness and I’m so grateful.”
