PORTAGE COUNTY, Ohio — A black bear has been spotted roaming a few streets in Streetsboro.

The animal was seen in the area of Delores Drive and Kensington Lane late Saturday night.

Streetsboro police are urging residents not to approach the bear if they see it, and to stay inside their homes.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources Wildlife Division and Portage County Wildlife officers have been notified of the sighting.

Earlier this month, ODNR officials said bear sightings would increase in northeast Ohio during the summer months.

“When they are breeding, the sows basically kick out their young, being their 18-month-old cubs, and these cubs are dispersing widely — particularly males — to find new home ranges,” Wildlife Management Supervisor Scott Peters told Fox 8 News.

Wildlife experts estimate that about 60 black bears live in Ohio year round.

Last year, 152 sightings of the state-protected animal were reported in 32 counties.
