STRONGSVILLE, Ohio -- Katie Tosland, of Avon Lake, had a baby shower of a different kind.

"I had a baby in the bathroom," Tosland said, laughing.

Monday evening, she and the baby’s father, Josh Zimmerman, were staying the night at his parents' Strongsville home before she underwent induced labor at the hospital Tuesday.

"I was thinking we could make it until the next day, maybe," she said.

Baby "Charlotte," or "Charlie," as she's called, had other plans.

"I get in the shower, and I'm like, 'We're going to the hospital tonight,' " Tosland said.

Tosland realized the contractions were coming a little too close together.

She got out of the shower, and realized the baby was coming, right then.

Zimmerman's mother ran to help Tosland, called 911, and a dispatcher started talking them through it.

"They told her to have me lay down on the floor. She got me a couple of pillows, and I could just feel her coming. I needed to push, and it was just the most pain I've been in, in my entire life," Tosland said.

Strongsville firemedics arrived and took one look at Tosland in the bathroom.

"We knew we were doing an emergency childbirth on-scene," said Strongsville firemedic John Douglas, who delivered the baby.

"We had two crews on-scene, both crews worked together for the delivery. I just happened to be the one down there actually catching and doing the delivery," Douglas said.

Thursday afternoon, Tosland, Zimmerman and their family got to thank the firemedics in person.

"Thank you. I'm going to give you a hug. I'm gonna cry," Tosland said as she held baby Charlie and gave Douglas a hug in the lobby of the Strongsville Fire Department.

"No problem," Douglas said.

The delivery took just six minutes.

Charlie is happy and healthy, and now it's her turn to be showered with love.

Charlie has two brothers and two sisters.
