EASTLAKE, Ohio -- A family shoplifting extravaganza was caught on video.

According to Eastlake police, 30-year-old Kanita Sheppard used her 12-year-old son to steal more than $400 worth of merchandise.

“That's terrible. I couldn't imagine anything like that,” said Eastlake resident Jen Richards.

This past Saturday, police were called to the Wal-Mart on Vine Street in Eastlake for a shoplifting complaint.

Surveillance video shows the mother and two young children meeting up with a 12-year-old boy who is pulling his own cart full of items.

After leaving the boy’s side, his mother peruses the checkout. When the son heads toward the exit with a cart full of stolen merchandise, police are standing by to greet him. A short time later, the boy’s mother tries to leave and police place her under arrest.

“Stealing is my personal pet peeve, so I think that's terrible using your kids to do something like that,” said Richards.

Police say after she was first approached the mother denied knowing the child. According to the city prosecutor, it’s unlikely the boy will face charges.

“For one thing, to have your child do it, then not claim him. That person should be locked away forever; that's terrible,” said parent Chris Guggenbiller.
