Robber, 70, Shoots Himself During Akron Break-In

A Tallmadge man was taken into custody recently for a robbery gone wrong.

According to Akron Police, Gerald M. Smith, 70, of Dunbar Road, was arrested at his home and charged with aggravated burglary and felonious assault.

The arrest came after Smith allegedly went to a home on Gleason Avenue in Akron and tried robbing a person inside. Smith was carrying a loaded gun when he entered the home.

Police say Smith struck the victim with the gun and in the process shot himself in the arm.

After Smith shot himself, he fled the residence and returned to his home where he was arrested.
