CLEVELAND -- Cleveland police now know the name of a woman found beaten to death under a bridge, partially buried in snow.

The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner used fingerprints to positively identify the woman. They say she is 59-year-old Susan Cancasci, of Mayfield Heights.

"I'm at East 33rd and Hamilton right now and there's a body underneath the bridge here," a passing truck driver says in a call to 911.

Around 10:15 a.m. Monday, he called police after spotting a woman's body under a bridge near the 3400 block of Hamilton Avenue. Investigators say she was partially covered in snow.

"The way that they say she died, nobody has a right to die that way...regardless of what kind of person they are or anything," said Cancasci’s neighbor, Waitman Sager.

The county medical examiner says Cancasci died of "blunt force trauma" to the head, ruling her death a homicide. Cleveland police say she had a limited mental capacity.

"It's sad, and like I said, we seen her grow up, lived here all this time with her and close to her," Sager said.

Cancasci’s neighbor says her parents are both deceased, and her brother and uncle would often come to her home to check on her.

"We know that the uncle came on Wednesday and took her to the library and I guess out to dinner and brought her back, and the next day, he came and couldn't get in the house," Sager said.

Mayfield Heights police say no one filed a missing persons report. Sager says her family didn't realize anything was wrong.

"She had a history of doing things of this nature, taking off and be gone two or three days, and then she'd come back...either that, or somebody would go get her," he said.

Sager says her family thought maybe that had happened again.

"Then when those detectives came yesterday, well, then we found out that wasn't what happened," he added.

Anyone with information about Susan Cancasci’s death is asked to call the Cleveland Division of Police Homicide Unit at (216) 623-5464.
