NORTH CANTON, Ohio–A Florida man is behind bars after a hit-and-run accident involving a North Canton police cruiser.

Police say 59-year-old Kevin C. Kreiter, of Pompano Beach, Florida, was driving northbound in the southbound lane of Market Avenue, when he came face-to-face with the cruiser around 2:30 this morning.

The officer barely avoided a head-on collision by swerving left of center. The cruiser was sideswiped on the passenger side.

The officer was not injured, and was able to radio a description of the 1998 Lincoln Navigator and direction of travel.

The Navigator continued north, forcing several other vehicles off the road. Lake Township Police later found the SUV stopped at the intersection of Kent Avenue NE and Smith Kramer Street NE.

Police say they found Kreiter wandering around the intersection, highly intoxicated.

Police arrested and charged Kreiter; the Navigator was impounded.

According to the police report, officers later learned that the Navigator had been reported stolen by its owner.

Additional charges are expected. Stay with Fox 8 News and FOX8.com for the latest.
