SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (KTLA) -- One surfer got a little too close for comfort to some huge humpback whales off the coast of Santa Cruz, and a camera was rolling while it happened.

In the video posted to YouTube, two humpback whales surface with mouths open as they go after a school of anchovies.

You see the bait fish scatter in a panic, and then the whales crash up like a surfacing submarine.

Seagulls then descend on the spot to see if there's anything left over for them.

It was a close call, but the surfer -- and two kayakers who were nearby -- were not hurt.

The whales have been feeding off Santa Cruz lately, and a little closer to land than usual.
