Jury recommends death for convicted killer Shawn Grate

ASHLAND, Ohio— A jury has recommended the death sentence for the man convicted of killing two women.

Shawn Grate, 41, was convicted earlier this month of aggravated murder and kidnapping in the 2016 strangulation deaths of Stacey Stanley and Elizabeth Griffith. Their bodies were found in a vacant Ashland home after a third woman escaped.

The jury heard evidence aimed at saving Grate's life before deciding to recommend death. They could have recommended life in prison.

Ashland County Judge Ronald Forsthoefel will make the final decision on June 1.
