Police chief: officers shoot, kill suspect during chase on Cleveland’s east side

CLEVELAND  –  Police were on hand at a scene at East 93rd and St. Clair Avenue where ta Cleveland police officer was involved in a fatal shooting.

Neighbors tell Fox 8 that they heard some shots fired near Stewart Avenue and that a chase followed. There is activity at a home in the area as of 7 p.m.

Chief Calvin Williams says that at about 4:30 p.m., residents near East 90th and St. Clair called the police because they heard gunshots.

When police arrived, they did not see anything at first and began to tour the area.  They saw two suspicious men and decided to make an investigatory stop. At that time, one of the men showed what appeared to be a handgun and both suspects began running away.

Officers chased them, and during the pursuit, one of the men fell and dropped a handgun. Police commanded him to stop, but he did not.

After running into a backyard, the man pulled out a second weapon. Shots were fired.

The suspect in the chase was taken to the hospital, where he died from his injuries.

None of the police officers were injured.

The name of the deceased is not being released yet.
