LORAIN, OH – Lorain Police are investigating a fatal traffic accident that happened around noon on Saturday.

Edward Smedly, 37, of Elyria, was driving on Cooper Foster Road when his Mazda 3 went off the road and hit a tree near the intersection of Orchard Hill Boulevard.  Police tell Fox 8 that he was killed in the crash.

The road was closed for nearly four hours as the scene was processed for evidence. The crash itself still remains under investigation and police say they do not know if alcohol or drugs were a factor. They do report that excessive speed appears to have played a part in the crash, though.

Anyone with information on this crash is being asked to call Officer Gelenius with the Lorain Police Department Traffic Bureau at 440-204-2115.
