‘A monster’: Authorities arrest Lorain man in child abduction, attempted child abduction

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Familial DNA led to the arrest of a Lorain man in the abduction of a Cleveland girl in May and the attempted abduction of an Elyria girl last February.

Justin Andrew Christian, 29, was arrested Friday on charges of kidnapping and rape.

“Detectives and agents have worked this case tirelessly for the last seven months and we are pleased to announce an arrest in this case,” said Cleveland Division of Police Calvin D. Williams in a press release. “With this suspect behind bars, our children are safer.  This case could not have been solved without the partnered effort of all of these agencies.”

The FBI has been searching for the man since May.

Hundreds of agents and police officers across the state have worked on the case. The FBI released surveillance video of the kidnapper and his car in previous months.

Prosecutor Tim McGinty: The case that occurred in Elyria Feb. 24 and the crime in May in Cleveland were greatly concerning to all law enforcement…it was apparent there was a child rapist…who had to be apprehended as quickly as possible.

Darcie Loreno December 5, 20169:49 am

McGinty: There were hundreds of hours put into the investigation, but “we had no leads” at the beginning.

Darcie Loreno December 5, 20169:50 am

McGinty: “He was a careful, diabolical stalker.”

Darcie Loreno December 5, 20169:50 am

McGinty: He scouted the homes before the crimes

Darcie Loreno December 5, 20169:53 am

McGinty: BCI matched evidence on the ladder in the Elyria attemped abduction with DNA from the 6-year-old victim who was abducted and carried out of a home in a satchel in Cleveland.

Darcie Loreno December 5, 20169:54 am

McGInty: The probable cause in the arrest was not DNA evidence. The evidence gave us a tip and put us in the right direction.

Darcie Loreno December 5, 20169:55 am

McGinty: Authorities put information together that this fellow matched all the criteria. They conducted searches through the middle of the night. The suspect was then arrested.

Darcie Loreno December 5, 20169:55 am

McGinty: The familial DNA will be used most carefully.

Darcie Loreno December 5, 20169:56 am

McGinty: Suspect is one of the most “sick and warped people” McGinty has seen in his career.

Darcie Loreno December 5, 20169:57 am

McGinty: He has a drug-related criminal history in the Elyria area, no sexual-related charges

Darcie Loreno December 5, 20169:58 am

McGinty: There are other incidents in which he’s also being investigated. The same MO was employed in those incidents. “We knew there was an active predator.”

Darcie Loreno December 5, 20169:59 am

McGinty: There may be a social media connection with the children as a way for the predator to have targeted them.

Darcie Loreno December 5, 20169:59 am

McGinty: It’s another instance where parents should be aware of their children’s social media involvement.

Darcie Loreno December 5, 201610:01 am

McGinty: His family lives in both Cleveland and Elyria areas.
