KENT, Ohio– A man convicted of murdering a Kent State student was sentenced to death.

Nicholas Massa, 18, was visiting a friend at Ryan Place apartments near campus on Feb. 7 when three suspects barged in and demanded money, police said. Massa, a Kent State freshman, was shot and killed.

A Portage County jury convicted 19-year-old Damantae D. Graham, of Akron, of aggravated murder, aggravated burlgarly and kidnapping. Jurors recommended he be sentenced to death.

On Tuesday, Portage County Common Pleas Judge Laurie J. Pittman officially sentenced Graham to the death penalty.

The three other suspects in the case have pretrial hearing this week. The trial is set to start on Nov. 22.

Investigators said they believed Massa, a Westlake High School graduate, was at the wrong place at the wrong time.
