CLEVELAND-- A man and woman went to court on Wednesday facing charges they cashed checks sent to a Cleveland crossing guard after she had died.
Karl Hackney and Kristin Flowers pleaded not guilty. Cuyahoga County prosecutors said both suspects are adult children of the former crossing guard.
Months ago, the I-Team uncovered the investigation, and it recently led to indictments. Prosecutors said a dozen checks were cashed after being sent to the woman who had passed away. The payments were discovered by the state pension system.
The cases have now been assigned to a judge and lawyers have been appointed for the suspects.
No one at Cleveland City Hall was criminally charged or disciplined internally for how this happened. The city said it has new safeguards in place to prevent anything like it again.
