Exclusive video: Car stolen with child inside outside Cleveland day care

CLEVELAND- The FOX 8 I-Team has obtained exclusive video of a thief stealing a vehicle with a 7-year-old girl inside, and it happened as the girl’s mother had taken a baby inside a day care.

The day care’s security cameras captured it all Tuesday morning near East 55th and Broadway in Cleveland.

A young mother says she accidentally left the keys on the front seat along with her 7-year-old in the backseat of the vehicle as she took the baby inside the day care. Video shows the thief start to drive off.

Then he slams on the brakes and lets the girl get out. She walks back to the day care. Mom says the girl told her the man had a gun. The mother said, "She said that he pointed it to her and said get out. Not sure if she startled him from being in the car to begin with. Or if he seen her in the car to begin with, but I just thank God that he let her out."

The video also shows the thief start to get out of the car as he lets the girl out, but a police car happens to pass by there. So he gets back in and drives off.

A day care manager happened to be checking the cameras on his phone, and he saw it all as it happened. He said, “I happened to see the car getting stolen right before my eyes. It happened so fast, but I believe in child care centers, surveillance is a must."

We’re not identifying the mother as the thief still has her car and her wallet with personal information. She says she won’t ever leave a child like that again. And she thinks this should remind everyone to stay alert. She said, "They'll catch you getting out of your car with children, broad daylight, late at night. So mothers , women, period, just be careful."
