Two young girls in Cleveland remain hospitalized after drive-by shooting

CLEVELAND- An investigation is underway Wednesday after two young children were shot in an apparent drive-by shooting.

It happened on Dudley Avenue around 10:20 Tuesday night. The home is near West 73rd street in the Detroit-Shoreway neighborhood.

Two girls, ages 3 and 9, remain at MetroHealth Medical Center. Their conditions have not yet been released but they were both alive and breathing when they were taken by ambulance Tuesday night.

Fox 8 was told the 3-year-old was shot in the face and the 9-year-old was shot in the back.

Cleveland Police say the preliminary investigation indicates this was a drive-by shooting. Police say a dark colored vehicle drove down the road shooting toward the home. No arrests have been made.

Witnesses described the terrifying scene. "I was out walking my dog in the alley and I heard the six shots and a bunch of police cars rolled up," Zack Saunders said. "At first the gunshots sounded like loud popping noises like fireworks but they were spaced close together."

Another witness, who did not want to be identified, tells Fox 8 she saw two cars driving slowly down the road. She said she was watching TV with her son when they heard the gunshots.

"I heard live five or six gunshots and I told my son to get down on the floor" she said. "Then like two seconds later we started hearing the sirens and the lights and we came out on the porch and I saw them rush the babies into the ambulance and take off."

Both witnesses tell Fox 8 gunshots in their neighborhood is nothing new.

"It's sad when the kids are getting shot," Zach Saunders said. "We're going to have to arm ourselves to shoot back at them. I hate to say it that way but you have to protect your family."

Officers and detectives remained on scene investigating following the shooting. Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 216-621-1234.
