MASSILLON, Ohio -- The man accused of kidnapping and assaulting a 9-year-old girl in Massillon appeared in court Friday.

Dennis L. Menefee, 46, of Port Washington, faces charges of rape, kidnapping, assault and aggravated menacing in the case.

He was issued $2 million bond. His preliminary hearing was set for Oct. 7.

The victim was walking home from the library on Monday when she was abducted near St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Massillon. The girl was beaten and sexually assaulted before she was able to go home and tell her family, police said.

Menefee was arrested Wednesday.

Menefee pleaded guilty to manslaughter in 1999 and spent time in prison.  He raped a woman and left her on the side of the road in Wyoming. The victim, Cindy Lee Dixon, froze to death.
