NORTH OLMSTED, Ohio-- Local beauty school students say it’s an ugly situation that will not ruin their dreams.
Regency Beauty Institute suddenly shut down campuses across the country, including four in Northeast Ohio. Those locations are in North Olmsted, Willoughby, Akron and Canton.
"When you have a passion and you believe in something and to just have it gone like that, it sucks, you know. And there's nothing, there's nothing we can do but try to move on," said student Dashanae Nixon.
Surprised, shocked and stunned, dozens of emotional students removed their belongings from the now-closed Regency Beauty Institute in North Olmsted Thursday afternoon.
"It’s difficult seeing it close because it's been home for the last two months. And spending 40 hours a week here, you make a family because it's your home away from home," said student Erica Colella.
The North Olmsted location is one of 79 Regency campuses nationwide that abruptly shut down Wednesday,
Paris Wakefield had one more week to go before graduating.
"I've been in the program... August made it a year, and as of October 11, I would've been done with my full course," Wakefield said.
A message on the school's website states that Regency Beauty Institute, in operation for more than 50 years, simply "does not have the cash to continue to run the business."
It cites, "declining numbers of cosmetology students nationwide" and "an inability to obtain continued financing."
"I didn't like the way they handled it. To tell us all that they closed, they could have handled it a little bit better," Kayla Claburn said.
"We trying to figure out what school can we go to and are we at default with our loans and things like that," Tamika Hardy said.
"It's not going to stop our dream, you know. We're going to stay motivated and dedicated to what we're doing because this is what we believe in. But you know, it's just a minor setback for a major comeback," Nixon said.
Students said the lessons learned here and the bonds they created will help as they restyle their futures.
According to the school’s website, students can also pick up their belongings Friday between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. It also states that students transcripts will be mailed to them.
The school added that other accredited cosmetology schools are eager to accept Regency students and officials hope to post the names of those schools on Monday.
