The death of an Ohio Highway Patrol trooper last week on I-90 led the FOX 8 I-Team to investigate if more troopers are getting hurt on duty.
In fact, it appears that way. The Patrol says in all of 2015 a total of 88 troopers were injured on the job. And this year, through August, already 87 had been hurt. However, the Patrol said those were total numbers and could involve anything from traffic enforcement to battling with suspects and more.
Meantime, the Patrol says no Ohio troopers lost their lives in the line of duty last year or this year until last week. Investigators say trooper Kenneth Velez died after getting hit while flagging over a vehicle. Police say Joshua Gaspar was impaired by drugs and hit the trooper.
The head of the troopers union says it’s a dangerous job, and the death of Kenneth Velez is “absolutely a tragedy."
However, there have been no specific new safety concerns.
