Students to wear blue at football game to honor fallen trooper

AMHERST, Ohio -- Students are planning to wear blue at tonight's Amherst High School vs. Berea Midpark High School football game to honor Ohio State Highway Patrol Trooper Kenneth Velez, who was killed Thursday.

Velez, 48, was hit and killed while conducting a stop on Interstate 90 in Lakewood around 1 p.m. Thursday. He was outside of his patrol car when it happened.

He was the father of three children, including Amherst High School student and football player, Christian Velez.

According to the Amherst Exempted Village Schools superintendent's office, Christian Velez will play in tonight's game because his dad would have wanted him to.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol also plans to send their color guard to the game, and a large contingent of law enforcement plans to show their support.

Amherst High School asked Berea to wear blue, and the high school tweeted about it:
