Suspect charged after woman abducted, bodies found in Ashland and Richland counties

ASHLAND, Ohio-- Charges were filed against the man accused of holding a woman captive and killing two others.

On Thursday, Shawn M. Grate, 40, of Ashland, was charged with one count of kidnapping and two counts of murder, according to Ashland County Court of Common Pleas records. Each count of of murder carries a sentence of 15 years to life to prison.

Police responded to a house on Covert Court in Ashland Tuesday morning. A woman told 911 dispatchers Grate was holding her captive.

The woman was rescued and investigators discovered two bodies in the abandoned home. One victim was identified as 43-year-old Stacey Stanley.

"The charge alleges that Grate purposely caused the deaths of Stacey Hicks, also known as Stacey Stanley, and a second victim who has yet to be positively identified. The kidnapping charge alleges that Grate held another female victim against her will for the purpose of engaging in sexual activity with her between the dates of September 11 and 13," Ashland County Prosecutor Christopher R. Tunnell said in a news release.

Tunnell said the investigation is still in the early stages and more charges could be filed.

Authorities said Grate led them to a second location Richland County, where they found a third set of remains.
